Considering the decline of the British iron and steel industry it is perhaps iromic that the Norton Scrap Metal Terminal in Liverpool Docks exports over 2 million tonnes of scrap metal to Eastern European and Far Eastern smelters each year. We import reformulated product from these regions at costs below that of our own production! The export berth, which can load 30000 tonne ships in a 24 hour period, is surrounded by mountains of scrap metal which are continuously replenished by conveyors from the nearby crushing plant.
