The HIV Aids Pandemic is perhaps at its most virulent and destructive in Southern African countries as widley discussed in Oxfam publications. The image submitted attempts to show this issue as a global problem and in particular in this region of the world. The hand grasping the tool in a positive manner reflects and addresses the points made in The Live Aid Legacy research survey regarding the superiority/inferiority image(the givers and the receivers of aid respectivley) as shown in the media over the last twenty years. Similarly the use of a white person, albeit dirty and soiled, deliberatly attacks steretypical assumptions about who suffers from this disease. It is also making a statement about the self reliance and dignity of the peoples suffering from this humanitarian disaster. The inclusion of the tool suggests production and economy, one of the major factors that determine interest on matters of human suffering in the developed worlds media (The CARMA Report on Western media coverage of Humanitarian Disasters Jan 2006).
